Mark Bruner

PhD, CMPC

Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

I’m excited to be joining Bay Psychology. My journey into mental health counselling is a culmination of my research on youth development through sport and my applied sport psychology work with athletes. A growing concern with my athletes is mental health. To better support the mental health and performance of the athletes, teams, and community members I am fortunate to work with, I’m completing my Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree at Yorkville University.

In terms of my formal training, I’m a Canada Research Chair in Youth Development through Sport and Physical Activity and a Professor in the School of Physical and Health Education at Nipissing University. I received my Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan and completed my postdoctoral training at Queen’s University. My research program investigates group dynamics and psychosocial development in youth sport and physical activity settings. I have published over 90 academic journal articles, 10 chapters, and co-edited a book, The Power of Groups in Youth Sport. I am a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC) and have been a mental performance coach and consultant for over 20 years working with elite youth and university sport teams, and the Canadian Armed Forces.

On a personal note, I enjoy playing ice hockey, trail running, gardening, and coaching my two daughters in competitive soccer.

I look forward to working with clients under the supervision of Dr. Sachiko Nagasawa to address and overcome mental health challenges, enhance well-being and optimize performance.
